Quick Facts
A Note Before You Order
The solar mounting pole is required but is not included with the aeration system. The standard system uses a single solar panel, while the Solar XL uses two panels. If you add the optional Backup Battery Module to the standard system, the system is upgraded to include a second solar panel. Choose an installation location with clear access to direct sunlight and adequate space around the compressor enclosure for ventilation.
Scott Aerator Solar Subsurface Aeration System
The Solar Subsurface Aeration System provides pond and lake aeration without requiring AC wiring or ongoing grid power. Solar energy powers a brushless rocking-piston compressor that sends air through weighted tubing to submerged diffusers, creating circulation and oxygen transfer below the surface.
The standard two-diffuser system is designed for ponds up to 2.5 acres, while the Solar XL four-diffuser system can cover up to 5 acres. The system uses a fiberglass-reinforced enclosure, powder-coated steel components, stainless steel hardware, automatic ventilation, electronic overcurrent protection, and a washable primary air intake filter. An optional 48-volt Backup Battery Module is also available for extended operation when sunlight is unavailable.
Configuration Guide
Solar Subsurface Aeration System
The standard configuration uses a solar-powered brushless compressor with two submerged diffusers and a single solar panel. It is designed for ponds and lakes up to approximately 2.5 acres.
The system provides 2.5 SCFM of air output and is rated for depths of 30 feet or more.
Solar XL Subsurface Aeration System
The Solar XL configuration uses two solar panels, two brushless rocking-piston compressors, and four submerged diffusers. It is designed for ponds and lakes up to approximately 5 acres, with larger systems available for suitable applications.
The Solar XL provides 5 SCFM of air output and is rated for depths of 30 feet or more.
Optional Backup Battery Module
The optional Backup Battery Module uses a 48-volt battery bank to provide stored power when solar production is unavailable. Scott Aerator states that the module can provide up to three full days of power without sunlight under suitable conditions.
The Backup Battery Module requires a two-panel solar array. Adding it to the standard system upgrades the solar array from one panel to two panels.
Specifications & Details
Installation & Assembly
Site Selection
Choose a location where the solar array has clear, unrestricted access to direct sunlight. The compressor enclosure should be protected from flooding and high water, with clear air space around it for proper ventilation. Keep the installation away from vehicle and equipment pathways.
Mounting Pole
Each system requires an installer-supplied steel mounting pole. The current installation instructions accommodate 3-inch or 4-inch steel poles, with standard packaging including two clamping U-bolts for a 3-inch pole. The mounting pole and foundation are not included with the aerator.
Solar Panel Installation
The solar racking is fully adjustable and should be positioned to provide strong solar exposure throughout the day. The supplied installation guide provides recommended year-round tilt angles based on latitude and allows seasonal adjustment where appropriate.
Electrical Connections
Connect the solar module wiring according to the supplied installation instructions. The solar modules must not be connected incorrectly or wired in series. MC-4 solar connectors should not be buried and should be protected from physical damage.
Diffuser Deployment
The weighted diffuser tubing is deployed to the desired location on the pond or lake bottom. A suitable boat and a second person may be helpful during deployment. Diffuser placement can affect aeration performance, so the manufacturer recommends consulting a dealer or professional aquatic engineer when determining diffuser locations.
Maintenance & Operation
Air Intake Filter
The primary compressor air intake filter is washable and reusable. Keep the filter clean to maintain proper airflow and system performance.
Ventilation
Check the enclosure vents and cooling fan regularly. Restricted airflow can cause overheating, and failures caused by restricted airflow are not covered under the manufacturer's warranty. Do not place the enclosure inside another enclosure or modify the cooling system.
Initial Operation
When commissioning the system, the manufacturer recommends starting during good solar conditions. The balancing valves should be open before starting the system. After the compressors begin operating, adjust the valves to balance the airflow between the diffusers.
Transitioning an Existing Pond
For older ponds with accumulated organic muck, the manufacturer recommends beginning aeration gradually. Start with approximately 30 minutes to one hour per day for the first few days, then increase operating time by no more than one hour per day until the desired operating period is reached.
Winter Safety
Aerated ponds and lakes can have thin ice or open water during winter. Do not walk on ice over an aerated body of water, and follow appropriate local safety requirements and warnings.
Warranty
2-Year Component Warranty
The current Solar Subsurface Aeration System product information states that all components are covered by a 2-year warranty. Warranty coverage remains subject to the manufacturer's terms and installation requirements.
